A new type of employment status, ‘employee shareholder’, was introduced on 1 September 2013. It allows employees to surrender certain statutory employment rights in exchange for tax efficient shares.
Existing workers are protected against being subjected to a detriment if they refuse to change to an employee shareholder contract. It is automatically unfair to dismiss someone for refusing to accept an offer to become an employee shareholder.
