If you fail to pay the minimum wage you can be ordered to pay arrears immediately and to pay a penalty of up to £20,000. Failure to comply with an enforcement notice can lead to criminal penalties. It is very important, therefore, that you are fully aware of your obligations to pay the national minimum wage and that you keep adequate payroll records.
