Zero Hours Contracts
Nick Clegg has announced that the government is reviewing the breadth and impact of zero hours contracts. As the name suggests, these are contracts under which the employer is not obliged to provide a minimum amount of work, but the employee is obliged to be available for work when offered.
Office of National Statistics figures from this week suggest that there are somewhere in the region of 250,000 employees working under such contracts in the UK.Nick Clegg is reported to have said that it was necessary to ensure labour market flexibility, but not at the cost of unacceptable levels of individual insecurity, and that decisions would be made after the business department’s report had been prepared. We will keep you posted!
