Guaranteed part time work
HSBC claims to be the first large UK employer to guarantee part-time work when parents return after maternity or paternity leave. It has announced that it will offer a part-time role equivalent to 2.5 days per week in an effort to encourage more employees to return to work.
There is currently no legal obligation on employers to provide part-time work, although parents of children under the age of 17 (or 18 if disabled) and employees caring for adults have a right to request flexible working. The government is considering extending the right to request flexible working to all employees.
