Shared Parental Leave: When Can Leave Be Taken?
Shared parental leave can be taken from a child’s birth until the day before their first birthday. In adoptions, it can be taken from the date of the adoption placement until the day before the first anniversary of that placement. Shared parental leave cannot begin before a child is born or placed for adoption. Leave can start on any day of the week, but must be taken in multiples of one week. Parents can take shared parental leave at the same time, and a father/partner can take shared parental leave whilst a mother is still on maternity leave, so long as she has given notice to curtail that leave.
