Maternity: Support on Return to Work

When an employee returns from maternity leave, you should consider what support is appropriate, such as refresher training and work-related updates. You may need to organise catch-up meetings to set objectives if an employee has missed these during her leave. A returning employee will be entitled (like all employees with 26 weeks’ service) to request flexible working, and she may wish to extend her absence by requesting annual or parental leave immediately after her maternity leave, or she may be unable to return immediately due to sickness. If an employee is breastfeeding you will need to be aware of your health and safety duties and, if she requests this, you may need to consider allowing some flexibility in her working hours to accommodate this.
