Suspension is a serious step and should not be an automatic stage in the disciplinary process: whether it is reasonable will depend on the circumstances. If you suspend an employee you should make clear that this is not a disciplinary sanction and in most cases you should suspend on full pay. The period of suspension should be as short as possible and you should keep the employee informed of progress.
